This course is such a rich and comprehensive collection of lesson materials and instruction as you expertly provide in the Discovering The Modes on the Native American Style Flute. I thought I had a fairly good grasp on the modes, but you have opened… No! blown open the doors to a whole new level with this deep dive! I love the diamond method used in this course to introduce and utilize as part of an easy and fun way to explore the modes. The three position choices opens up another intriguing opportunity to explore the range of and unique character of each of my flutes, as well as options for my improvisation and song writing! The backing tracks also add so much depth to my exploration and opportunities to capture the richness available within each mode! For those considering this course, Ami is an amazing teacher and I so appreciate having this material to explore and refer back to whenever I like. I give her and this course on the modes five shiny gold stars!

Kudos to the author! I loved this course. I had no clue what modes are and how I could apply them to my flute playing. I did not know that a mode expresses a feeling (sad, happy, mysterious, etc). The course is a lot of fun as it combines learning the modes in a hands-on way with some basic music theory. The material is well-organized, clearly presented, and easy to follow. The accompanying book is an awesome reference for learning the modes and applying them in your own flute playing for many years. I am very excited to explore the modes in improvising and songwriting. I whole-heartedly recommend this course!

The three most useful things I learned from this course are: 1) The viewer was challenged to not just play the modes but play and listen to the modes. Listen and feel the mood that the mode set. 2) Audio examples were used to show how different modes release sounds into the atmosphere that influence the emotions and mood. 3) Emphasis was placed on tonal centers.Their power to create tension and release by pulling away from and resolving back to the tonal center. This was demonstrated by her diamond technique which incorporated the pentatonic scale. Her explanation of the pentatonic scale made it easier for comprehension and use. This was the best teaching of all that I’ve viewed. Some of the things Ami discussed I’m already using on keyboard. She added validity to it all. The Diamond Technique was an excellent visual approach that summarize everything in her teaching. It’s a four-part structured approach that I plan on using because it makes room for improvisation, personal expression and creativity. It creates opportunities to generate sounds that create tension, creative expression, and release. It will help me provide support, grounding, relaxation, and presence for both the patient and myself when in a therapeutic session.

I have gotten so much out of this course and book. I loved how the teacher walked me through each mode and how the modes relate to each other. Learning about the flavor notes and intervals and how they created each modes distinct sound was very engaging. I loved the direction to play each interval alone and with other notes along with a backing track to practice improvising. The pyramid learning tool really provided an impressive guide to practice improvising. The book is a great reference book to go back to, refining my skill in playing the modes. I’m happy that I can expand my skill with the Native American style flute with the modes and their unique sound.

This course is wonderful. I have learned so much more about my flutes. The book is a resource that I will continue to use to solidify and deepen my learning. I showed it to my piano teacher this morning, and feel prepared to give a brief description to the local flute circle. Now to commit the pentatonic of the various modes into my deeper memory and being so that I can reach for those intervals and fingerings with feeling and not too much thinking…. like I can do with Aeolian now. I can’t even pick a favorite mode or two at this point, as they each have something to offer.

This course made me comfortable with how to approach the modes. It was so easy to understand and helped me, for one, let go of any concerns that this would be so far over my head.

The clear presentation of each mode and the very helpful songs included gave me a great depth of understanding. Some modes I avoided due to not fully understanding them. The method in this course provides careful step by step instruction and repetition which made all of the modes understandable for the first time. I really appreciate this!
