The workshop was chocked full of great information! I’m and so GLAD I attended. I think my biggest takeaway was the notion of short pointed segments. 30-second segments and then taking a break. Also, the notion. of “taking a break and walking away “ to allow the brain the time to integrate was also so important for me to hear. It validated what I know I need to do when I have something challenging to work on. To hear this is actually based on research and not my crazy brain being unable to focus was big. Thanks so much! * * * * * Maisie said... My biggest takeaway? That something tiny could derail me, but I now have the tools to excavate it and develop a way to deal with it! * * * * * Corinne said... My biggest takeaway from the Segment your Music Practice workshop is the '30 second sprint', working on what is hard for about 30 seconds then doing something else for about 10 minutes then going back to it. I have tried it now a couple of times and it does work! * * * * * Lori Sweet said... My biggest take away from this class was to realize that I might be judging myself too much and keeping myself from fully and joyfully embracing my musical exploration. I also loved learning that very short practice times can result in great progress! As a beginner in music in my late 50's, and a newbie to the flute, I need a safe and supportive space to explore, as well as, sound guidance and structure for learning basic skills. Ami's work and teachings offers both and this class was very helpful in breaking down learning into manageable steps and offering tips for self-care in the process! * * * * * Rachel said... I really enjoyed Ami's workshop. She gave me some valuable new insights and tools to use in my teaching practice. The discussion on "segmenting" was particularly timely. In other venues this concept has been described as "chunking" but the idea of practicing "pesky segments" of a musical piece, rather than playing through the entire thing, can save the student time and effort in the long run. Ami also referred to the results of segmented practicing. After practicing one particular line or transitional area in a piece over and over again, the results are often noticed later or during the next practice session. Ami explained this is because the brain needs time to assimilate the learning and the fingers will have also had time for "muscle memory" to take place. Personally, I have noticed that happening with my own piano practice, but I never articulated it in words so well. Ami is a gem and a wonderful teacher! Thank you, Ami!
